Organizer: Angela Calonder
Elijah McClain, a gentle soul who taught himself violin and played for stray cats, is one of the many Black Lives senselessly lost to police brutality that we are currently mourning in America.
Around the country, cities are holding Violin Vigils to honor his spirit, create a peaceful space for hope and healing, and protest the systemic racism that has made these vigils necessary in the first place.
Please join for New Orleans' iteration of the event on the steps in front of Jackson Square on at 7:30 pm on Sunday, July 5. All string instrumentalists are encouraged to bring their instrument and join in the harmonization and improvisation of the following songs (notation for C instruments located in the "Discussion" tab):
"We Shall Overcome" in C
"Lift Every Voice & Sing" in G
"Amazing Grace" in G
"His Eye is on the Sparrow" in D
Audience members are encouraged to bring candles/lighters; MASKS are currently MANDATORY in New Orleans.
