Organizer: Real Name Campaign NOLA
Co-Hosts: Freedom Road Socialist Organization New Orleans; Orleans Parish Prison Reform Coalition; NOLA Trans March of Resilience
We're rallying in honor and memory of Black Trans Lives: Riah Milton, Dominique Fells, and Tony McDade. We're fighting back against Trump's new rule legalizing healthcare discrimination against trans people. We're demanding that the city end its administrative violence against trans people by allowing accessible name and gender marker changes.
All during Pride month:
(1) Violence against Black trans people has escalated. We already saw Tallahassee police murder Tony McDade on May 27, and within 24 hours we have seen the murders of Riah Milton and Dominique Rem'mie Fells. We gather in their memory, and in recognition that transphobic governments green-light transphobic violence.
(2) This federal administration is repealing Sec. 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, allowing health providers to discriminate against trans people. We won't accept this attack on our lives!
(3) Orleans Parish Civil District Court still charges $505.50 for name changes, one of the highest fees in the country. Without correct identification, us trans people face getting clocked and turned away by employers, health providers, and shelters. While Trump sponsors our discrimination, the city courts leave us open to it. We want the elimination of outrageous fees and medical barriers to changing IDs.
And the COVID-19 health and economic crisis rages on. For an equitable recovery from the pandemic and 21st century Depression, transphobic discrimination has to go.
Please wear masks and practice social distancing. Bring extra masks for others if possible. Although the event location says room 402, we will be meeting outside the Civil District Court.
